The relative strength of position value shown on the Control Points Coordinates list for each quadrangle is not an indicator of the accuracy. It is a number assigned by the USGS based on the number of checks obtained for that survey point.

As an example, an occupied point with several connections to the surrounding network is a 1 (highest reliability). Whereas, a point positioned by two rays intersecting has no check and is assigned a value of 3 (lowest reliability).

(1). Indicates a checked occupied station.

(2). Intersected with 3 or more directions.

(3). Intersected station with no checks - uncertain position - use with caution.

The Thurston Island/Jones Mtn. survey networks were established to provide control for mapping using aerial photographs. All of the individual networks are tied to an astronomic observation taken during the field season of that survey.
